ORGANIC FOOD RECYCLING
Did you know?
Organic waste makes up 50-70% of all waste that is sent to landfill daily. When disposed of in landfill, it goes through anaerobic decomposition, which is caused due to a lack of oxygen, and will subsequently produce greenhouse gases, which pollute our air, soils and waterways.
One third of the world’s food is wasted, be it through farming, transport or hospitality and our homes. In Australia, food waste costs the economy around $20 billion each year. This waste is around 7.3 million tonnes, which breaks down to 300kg per person or one in five bags of groceries every year.
The good green news is that Australia has set a goal to halve its waste by 2030, aligning with the UN’s sustainable goal 12.3. Actions to undertake are laid out in the National Waste Action Plan and National Waste Food Waste Strategy. Speedie Waste & Recycle is already enthusiastically on board with composting to revitalise our soils and waste to energy which creates renewable energy to power Victorian homes.
What you can do?
We can all be more mindful in how we shop and plan our meals to avoid our own waste. Food Business’ waste is a work in progress and Speedie Waste & Recycle offer our customers two sustainable Organic Food Waste Services to take care of this waste for a circular economy.
By diverting food waste from landfill, it can be processed in one of two ways with us:
1. Processed to create renewable energy that powers Victorian households, or
2. Processed into compost.
